When solving Variable equations, the first priority is to get the variable alone.
Example:

12 = x2

To get x alone, we need to divide 2 from x, because it is being multiplied by x. By doing the opposite of what the 2 is doing, we are canceling it out, and leaving x alone. Now, do the same division to the other side of the equation.

12/2 = x

x = 6
